Wichita Mts Wildlife Refuge Campout

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, located in southwestern Oklahoma near Lawton, has protected unique wildlife habitats since 1901 and is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service system. Outdoor Activity will be hiking and bouldering in Oklahoma. The refuge spans over 59,000 majestic acres and is home to free range buffalo, Texas longhorn cattle, prairie dogs, elk and deer. There is a prairie dog town in the wildlife refuge that is worth a quick stop. Maybe hike to the Forty Foot Hole. Also the drive to top of Mount Scott reaches an elevation of 2,464 feet and bouldering is a 380 Scout favorite. Bison and longhorn are free roaming. For your safety and theirs, do not approach them. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge hosts habitat for large native grazing animals such as the American bison, Rocky Mountain elk, and white-tailed deer. Texas longhorn cattle also share the refuge rangelands as a cultural and historical legacy species. More than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species thrive on this important refuge.

Your Outing Cost Includes Lunch on Sunday!

A visit to Ft Sill Military Museum is planned. Also a food stop at Meers Store and Restaurant for a "Seismic Meersburger" if you dare, mighty plateful of burger by any standard, in a tiny town far from anywhere. Building exterior is one big photo-op. Hungry, just order fried green tomatoes, burgers, cheese fries, cobblers and ice cream!!!

Meers, once a bustling town of miners seeking gold in the Wichita Mountains. The town’s population has dwindled from the gold rush peak of 500 down to the present residents: one family of six people, eight cats and a dog. All that remains of the town now is a world renowned family restaurant also called Meers, home of the "Best Burger in Oklahoma". Famous for their Meersburger, a 7" diameter burger made exclusively from prize winning Texas Longhorn beef raised on the family's own ranch. Beef that is actually lower in cholesterol than chicken!
